Do Authority Sites Convert Better Than Mini Sites?
The continuing question regarding authority sites or mini sites may be diminishing in relevance in certain marketing circles. One thing to keep in mind is search engines naturally want to give their users good content. However, we would always tell marketers to do what they feel is best and have a natural affinity for doing with their businesses. If you want to only build minisites, then you will need to simply find an effective way to market them. Although you can more successfully do that with an authority site. It is just that the minisite requires one to be a little more creative with their promotional efforts.
The minisite approach necessitates that you build them based around a much narrower choice of keyword phrases. Even amidst all the uproar, albeit a quiet one at that, over what Google is doing, there are people still reporting very positive results with the use of mini sites. Your success will lie to a large extent in how well you research your market. How well your minisite performs rests heavily on the primary phrase it is optimized for, overall. It is possible to rank a minisite very highly for very narrow terms.
One factor you have to consider is the amount of work you're willing to put into your site, as authority sites are a more ambitious undertaking than mini sites. How you feel about this will depend on your personality, as well as how much time you have available. Mini sites can be attractive to people with short attention spans and who like a change of pace. When you know how to build mini sites, or if you use automated tools, you can create a new one daily. Building an authority site, however, can be a long process. They aren't totally different, however, as you can consider an authority site to be lots of mini sites under one domain.
In either case, you have to create new content, either to set up a new site or as part of a larger one.
Authority sites are also excellent tools for establishing fast credibility. There is an effect that a large website with great content has on a visitor. The larger sites simply invite the assumption of authority for many people. For some people, this is all that is needed for credibility to be established. This rarely happens with mini sites. That doesn't mean it never happens only that it happens rarely. Deciding whether to create an authority site or a mini site is one that may come down to how Google ranks different sites in those search results. A mini site is still doable, but you will find your self building more mini sites and putting in more effort to drive traffic to them. Mini sites are excellent additions to any carefully created marketing plan. However, you could see far greater benefits in terms of organic traffic and rankings from a larger site.
