Picking a New Bike

The bike you purchase will rely upon the type of riding you intend to do. If you would like to ride the trails, you're going to require the beefed-up suspension and sturdy tires of an off-road bike. Designed for riding off road and over craggy terrain, off-road bikes have powerful, strong frames and wheels, potent brakes, low gears for hill climbing, and upright handlebars.

If you're new to mountain biking, a front suspension trail bike is an good choice. You can ride it on dust roads and simple trails, but also on bike trails and paved trails. If you're a pretty serious rider who likes to climb steep hills and rocky trails and take frequent trail bike expeditions thru the backcountry, most bike articles would recommend a full-suspension cross country bike. You can gain benefit from the toughness and reliability of a full-suspension system as you come flying down rocky single-track.

Road (or racing) bikes are made for speed and distance with drop handlebars, light frames and hi-pressure narrow tires. The distance, speed and efficiency of road bikes have a price, though—road bikes are not intended for rocky trails or dust and are not as rough or robust as mountain bikes. If you are a very serious rider, need to go long distances, and wish to use cycling as a sort of exercise, you may wish to have a road bike.

Comfort bikes are a good decision when comfort is your first concern and speed is less crucial. Comfort bikes are excellent for riding around the town and running errands.

Cruiser bikes are a superb choice for easy going riding on the road or beach when you like. Well-padded, outsized seats and upright handlebars allow you to chill in the saddle and maintain a rather more natural posture while riding. If comfy, relaxed riding is your goal, a cruiser bike is your most sensible choice.

Hybrid bikes blend features of a mountain cycle and a road bike to offer you the choice of riding on the road or the trail. Like road bikes, compounds are lighter and have narrower, smooth-rolling tires and snug saddles and grips satisfactory for pavement riding. Naturally, mixing the two designs means compound bikes are not as craggy as cross country bikes or as fast as road bikes, but land somewhere in the middle to suit a great number of purposes. Commuters, recreational riders, and fitness riders who require the performance of both a road and a mountain bike should pick a hybrid bike.

BMX bikes look like mountain bicycles, but can be ridden quicker and are a lot more flexible because they have smaller wheels and smaller frames. Built to be ridden and raced over courses with ramps, difficulties, curves, and corners, BMX bikes are made for racers as well as for youngsters who require a coarse, tough bike. Not great for extremely young kids or beginners, freestyle bikes are for trick riders who often wear knee and elbow pads as well as a helmet.

After a child is happy with training wheels, she or he can move up to bigger bikes with six or twenty-one gears and start shifting and using handbrakes. Youngsters' bikes are made for the early rider thru the more advanced young adult rider.
